John Shaw
Head of Personal Injuries and Insurance Litigation Section
John Shaw was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland on 15 February 1972 and the High Court of Australia on 30 January 1976.
John joined Swanwick Murray Roche in 1972 and has practiced almost exclusively in areas of personal injuries and insurance litigation.
John is an approved mediator and case appraiser of the Supreme Court and embraces alternative dispute resolution procedures as a cost effective alternative to litigation. John is a senior counsellor of the Queensland Law Society.
John has had over 35 years experience in the direct control and legal management of Workers Compensation common law matters having been retained by WorkCover (and the former SGIO) since 1973. He has also been retained by Suncorp and several self-insured entities to provide common law worker's compensation services.
In this regard John has been retained as preferred solicitor by several Central Queensland employers including:
- Anglo Coal (Capcoal Management) Pty Ltd;
- Rockhampton Health Service District;
- Mater Hospital and associated retirement homes;
- Central Queensland University;
- Roman Catholic Trust Corporation;
- CQ Ports Authority; and
- Consolidated Meat Group.
John's experience is such that he has had extensive exposure to the current Workers' Compensation legislation as well as its predecessors and exposure to associated Acts such as:
- Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002;
- Workplace Health & Safety Act 1995;
- Coal Mining Safety & Health Act 1999;
- Motor Accidents Insurance Act 1994 (as amended).
In addition to his extensive practice, John is an active participant in the Central Queensland community and is:
- A member (ex-Chairman 25 years) of the Capricornia Credit Union;
- Chairman of Centacare Central Queensland (15 years);
- Past President of Central Queensland Law Association.
