Katina Kyreakou

Overview

Katina grew up in Rockhampton after moving here from North Queensland at 14 years of age.  She attended the North Rockhampton State High school and left school to train to be a registered nurse at the Rockhampton Base Hospital.

After completing her nursing she studied law at James Cook University.  While studying she continued to nurse in many different settings including private and public hospitals, doctor’s surgeries and at Woorabinda from which she has many wonderful memories and learned some amazing skills.

Katina has lived in Yeppoon for over 20 years. Katina has family and friends throughout the Central Queensland Region and enjoys practicing in her hometown. As a lawyer, Katina is known for her straight-forward and clear advice and ability to guide clients through complex legal and emotional matters with empathy and compassion.

Focus

Katina prides herself on her down to earth personality and her ability to explain complex legal matters in a simple and clear manner.  She has a strong settlement focus believing that families (and in particular children) are better served by sorting their matters out amicably without the need for drawn out legal proceedings in Court.

Memberships and qualifications

Katina is a qualified Independent Children’s Lawyer and Separate Representative which means she is appointed to act for children in the Family Law and Child Protection jurisdictions.  Having practiced in these areas for many years Katina is able to assist clients in property settlements, parenting matters, divorce and matters where the Department of Child Safety has become involved.

Katina was a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for many years and is passionate about working towards ensuring that all people get fair and proper treatment before the law.

Katina has significant experience in matrimonial and de-facto property settlements, children’s arrangements, child support and domestic violence. Katina has a particular interest in children’s matters and matters with complex, high value property and asset holdings.

Katina has also practiced in the area of criminal law and can assist clients in matters which are before the Courts including traffic and licencing matters.

In 2020, Katina acted as the president of the Central Queensland District Law Association and has served on the access to Justice Committee of the Queensland Law Society.  She remains the Family Law and Social Justice coordinator for the local Law Association.

Katina is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia.

In 2022, Katina was promoted to be a Special Counsel of Swanwick Murray Roche.

Experience

  • Acting for clients in divorce proceedings.
  • Representing clients to finalise their financial arrangements after separation including property, chattels, superannuation, shares and complex family structures.
  • Acting for clients with high value property pools including complex agricultural holdings and business structures which also have significant succession plans in place.
  • Preparing Consent Orders or Binding Financial Agreements to legally finalise property matters between separated parties.
  • Acting for clients in spouse maintenance matters after separation.
  • Providing advice on (and acting for) clients in respect of Child Support matters including adult child support.
  • Preparing and giving advice on Binding Financial Agreements entered into before (or during) a relationship to assist parties in clarifying how financial matters will be dealt with if a relationship breaks down in the future including complex family structures and succession planning.
  • Acting for clients in respect of the appropriate arrangements for children after a separation including issues such as relocation, who the children live with and what time the children spend with the other parent.
  • Acting for third parties in respect of children’s arrangements including grandparents or non-biological parents.
  • If necessary, representing clients in Court to seek orders in respect of property and children’s matters.
  • Advising and representing clients in applications (or defending applications) for Domestic Violence Orders in the Magistrates Court.
  • Representing clients on criminal and traffic matters in the Magistrates, District or Supreme Courts.
  • Preparing Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney for clients after separation.
